About Dread
The featured game at Slur Your Role XXVII is Dread. The game is published by The Impossible Dream and was the winner of the 2006 Ennie Award for Innovation. According to brightrozee.com the game is unique in that it uses a Jenga tower for action resolution. Dread is a game of horror, but it is also a game of hope. The thrill of Dread lies within the tension between desire and loss. You will take on the role of someone trapped in a story that is only as compelling as it is hostile—someone who will find themselves making the sorts of the decisions we hope never to face in real life. Those who play will participate in a mutual telling of an original macabre tale. The goal of Dread is to sustain the delicate atmosphere that is necessary to produce the hand quivering emotion that lends its name to the game.
Gameplay
Dread is a game of the imagination, and a dark one at that. It should be said that Dread is not necessarily a game for everyone. While the main purpose of Dread, as well as that of any other game, is to have fun, Dread, like a good game of Truth or Dare, should make you uncomfortable from time to time.
Dread is a simple game that lends itself well to convention play. As with most tabletop RPGs, the GM describes what happens to and around the characters and the players contribute by narrating their actions. If a player attempts take a challenging action, the GM will instruct them to pull one or more blocks from the Jenga tower and the player will be given the option to make the pull and possibly succeed or to refuse and fail the action. If the player decides to make the pull and it is a success, the action succeeds, but if the tower is knocked over, that character is knocked out of the game. For more information about the rules of the game you can check out the complete quickstart version of the rules here.
Character Creation
Character creation in Dread is unique. The game uses a questionnaire method of character creation that guarantees characters will fit into the story and that gives players a reason to be invested. Players are encouraged to create interesting characters that will make the story fun rather than trying to make characters that will “survive and thrive,” and creating character flaws that will need to be overcome are integrated into the bedrock of the character creation process.
